When can I expect results?

 

Results vary by patient.  Some patients see improvement in symptoms the first week, while most feel better mid-way through treatment.  Often, friends and family notice positive changes first.

When can I stop taking my antidepressants?

Any decision regarding medications is made by the patient in consultation with their current prescriber. Most patients stay on their current medications during TMS treatments.  It is not usually recommended to change medications during TMS treatment so that everyone concerned can distinguish improvements that are the result of TMS from those that might have been caused by medication changes. Dr. Schwartz is available to discuss changes to medications with the patient's prescriber if desired.

 

How long will the results last?

Durability has been studied for up to one year.  Results differ by the patient.  Most insurance companies will cover a second round of TMS treatment if the patient has responded to TMS in the past and has relapsed.

What is the difference between ECT and TMS?

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) are very different. Both are therapies used in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder.   TMS, by contrast, is a non-invasive therapy and is generally administered in a doctor's office and commonly has no side effects. With TMS, there is no anesthesia and no seizure. When the treatment ends, the patient leaves the office and typically goes about their day without any problem.

 

 

Am I suitable?

TMS is currently indicated for adult patients (18 years old and above) with a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder who have not responded well to antidepressants in the current episode.

 

What will be my out of pocket costs for TMS?

Out of pocket expenses vary by insurance plan. Because of its FDA clearance and proven efficacy, TMS is covered by almost all insurance providers.  Before treatment begins, any costs to the patient will be determined and agreed upon.

 

What if I miss a treatment?

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy was studied with patients receiving treatment 5 days/week for 6 weeks, then a taper period for the last 6 treatments.  Please inform us of any travel plans/other commitments where you would need to miss consecutive treatments during your therapy.
